The Sutherlands' love of baseball is at all-time high (the Sutherland boys at least. Paige and Traci both find baseball excruciatingly long and boring, which isn't exactly untrue). So I decided the best thing to do was to watch some more of it.

The day after school let out for the summer, we packed up the minivan and headed to Denver to go watch a couple of Colorado Rockies games.

On driving

Other than one 10-hour trip Disneyland six years ago, our longest drives are the four-hour trips we make to St. George each year. We were a little nervous about driving eight hours to Denver, but everything went okay.

The Wyoming scenery was a touch monotonous but the <strike>soothing</strike> obnoxious sounds of Spongebob Squarepants DVDs, a handful of sessions of How Many NFL/NBA/NHL Teams Can You Name, and loads of treats helped the time go by.
After eight hours in the car, we were ready to unwind in the hotel. No such luck.Even though we arrived around 5 p.m., our room still wasn't ready.

"I'm really sorry...everything's booked...Memorial Day weekend..." the clerk stammered. "Called in sick...understaffed...and then the Taylor Swift concert really screwed things up."

Taylor Swift. Hmmph. Always getting in our way.

Traci and the boys stuck around in the lobby. Paige and I went wandering and found some pretty cool street art.
It took about an hour before the room was ready. It was worth the wait -- the hotel waived the $30/day valet parking charge as a concession. I'm always happy to save a few bucks, especially when the service is of little value. The first time our valet brought us our car, it took 10 minutes, and he brought the wrong one.

On church

Feeling guilty about doing a little Sabbath breaking to go a Sunday afternoon Rockies game, we tried to even the righteousness scales by going to church first. There's a saying in Mormonism, "The Church is the same everywhere."

That's mostly true. While the teachings are the same, it's nice to see how different the experience can be from place to place.

We visited a ward in downtown Denver. Instead of the standard standalone church building, it was in a four-story office space. (The boys were blown away when they saw an elevator in a church.) Instead of boring old white shirts and ties, there were a lot of bushy beards, t-shirts, tennis shoes, and even some dreadlocks.

It was the day before Memorial Day so it wasn't surprising that an older gentleman, wearing a stars-and-stripes necktie, was one of the speakers. He spoke about his time in the military, his love of his country, and how he was Mormon from time to time. And then he said, "With the okay of the bishopric, I'm going to do something a little unorthodox. I'd like everyone in the audience who has served in the military to stand up so we can recognize you."

That was a nice gesture.

And then he said something that I had a feeling would turn out badly.

"I'd like to invite them each to the pulpit to say a few words about their time in the military or anything else they'd like to talk about."

Five or six people stood up, most of them in their 70s or 80s, and one by one they came to the stand. They talked about Korea and Vietnam. About service and patriotism. About responsibility and freedom.

The last gentlemen who walked to the stage was probably in his 30s. He was wearing a long beard, shorts, and sandals.

"I became a member of the church in 2004," he said. "And then I stopped going almost immediately after. In fact, I kind of forgot I'd eve been baptized at all."

"But then today, I was walking by the church and I had a feeling I should come inside."

People's ears started to perk up. We were about to experience, firsthand, one of those faith-promoting stories you hear in Sunday School about the guy who walks into the church, feels the spirit, and immediately decides to turn his life around.

"I fought in a little-known battle in the Panama Canal. I was taken prisoner by my own government. That's when I learned that we have enemies within our own military. I guess sacrifices have to be made to feed the machine."

Everyone started to squirm uncomfortably in their seats. This went on a for a few minutes.

He continued, "And that's because of the #$%--- government. They've taken my children and my wife away."

That's when the bishop stood up, walked over to the gentlemen, and whispered something in his ear.

The man stopped mid-sentence, left the stage, and walked back out the front door of the building.

At least church wasn't boring.

After the museum, the boys wanted to go to another game. I happily obliged. (Paige and Traci decided to sit this one out, opting instead for a trip to the outdoor 16th Street Mall.)

But it turns out that spring in Denver is just as fickle as in Salt Lake City. When we started our 20-minute walk from the hotel to the stadium, the skies were slightly overcast. By the time we'd walked three minutes, we were caught in the middle of a torrential downpour.

We found shelter in an Avis parking lot, but I couldn't help feeling disappointed that the game would be rained out (and also that I'd lose the money I spent on the tickets).
Soaking wet, we walked back to the hotel.
What do you do on a rainy night in Denver? Swim in the indoor pool with Tate, of course.

For the first 30 minutes or so, we had the place to ourselves. We were just about to get out of the pool and into the hot tub when a 50-ish-year-old woman beat us to it.

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love a good tub. Regular tub, hot tub, hot spring, whatever. And my coworkers and I always joke that the best thing to do in a tub is to have a good, long cry. (Something I always plan to do, but never quite get around to.)

This woman got around to it. In a big way.

At first, it looked like she was just rubbing her eyes in a boy-this-hot-tub-really-is-hot type of way. So Tate and I got in there with her.

Once we were in the hot tub, it was easy to see that she was, in fact, sobbing. And then sobbing quite loudly.

At this point, we could have gotten up and left her on her own. Or said, "Are you feeling okay?"

But why would you want to stop someone from having a perfectly good cry? And, more importantly, why would we want to get out of perfectly good hot tub?

Then her friend (or partner) came down and sat with her. I couldn't hear what they were saying but I could tell that the sobbing turned to howling, which is made in more intense by echo chamber that is an indoor pool in the basement of the Hampton Inn.

We probably would have just stayed until we turned to raisins but Traci came down, pointing at her phone.

"Twitter says the rain delay is over. The game starts in a half hour."

We jumped out of the water and headed to the baseball game.

(Leaving the bather and her friend to continue to cry in the tub.)
By the time we got back to the park, the skies had cleared up. The Rockies didn't have as easy a time with the Giants as they did with the Reds the day before. They were losing most of the game, but tied it up in the 8th.

Could we be so lucky as to get extra innings at first-ever weekend of Major League baseball? Yep.

Could we get even luckier and watch the Rockies win the game on a walk off single in the bottom of the 10th? Yes, indeed.
The boys were so pumped up by the win that they talked about it the ENTIRE way back to the hotel. And then they recapped the entire game for Traci and Paige before they went to bed and then again when they woke up.

The baseball trip was a resounding success.

On coming back home

Before we headed out of town, we stopped by a place I've always wanted to see.

Obviously, I'd choose a Broncos game over a Rockies game, but it was fun just to walk around the house that Elway built.
A Broncos game (in Denver) is probably the next thing on my bucket list.

Instead of driving back home through Wyoming, we took the more scenic route through Vail and Price. The mountains were nice. But the two hours of twisting and turning was tough on a few stomachs in the back seat. Luckily no major incidents.

When the aux cable on the DVD player shorted out, causing Spongebob to go silent, we had bigger problems on our hands.

Luckily, Glenwood Springs, Colorado is large enough to have a Chili's and a Target. Traci took one look at the scenery and said,"I could live here." Then I reminded her that Glenwood Springs probably has winter. She immediately rescinded her prior comment.

Between car sickness and Target stops, the trip home took about an hour longer than the drive there and we were all ready to be back home.

Within five minutes of walking in the door, Tate's baseball coach called and asked if the boys wanted to come hit some balls at the bark. After a weekend of baseball, I thought they'd be exhausted.

Nope. They grab their mitts, their bats, and their Charlie Blackmon jerseys and headed out the door.

Congrats to our 6th grade graduate! Paige has certainly made the most of her elementary school years. School musicals and plays, debate team, history fair, future problem solvers, student council, library crew (just like her mom). Letâs see if junior high can handle this talented pre-teen.su-tang 3000http://www.blogger.com/profile/05402075107993300262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8091357.post-21004747997247642052018-04-28T00:16:00.001-07:002018-11-12T21:29:50.091-07:00Swing Batter, Batter, Swing

Our littlest guy isn't so little anymore. Tate just turned the big 0-7.

And I don't think he could have had a better day.

He got a brand new bathrobe â the perfect gift for a kid who wears pajamas every minute that he's home.

He spent hours playing with his new Football Guys, lining up plastic linemen and defensive backs, repositioning running backs, and making sure the referee was where he needed to be.

He went out to a fancy a lunch at Arby's.

He went to Play it Again Sports and tried on umpire masks and hockey goalie sticks.

He found a $1 copy of Madden 2012 for the Xbox at the D.I.

And he spent his evening at his happy place: the Maverik Center, watching the Utah Grizzlies.

The last time we went to Disneyland, I told Traci it would be probably be the last time we went to Disneyland.

Not only is it incredibly expensive, but you only get so many family vacations. Why would you want to spend all of them in the same place?

But then I got invited to speak at a social media conference at Disney World.

SoooâŚ.

Here are some thoughts on our first (and probably last) trip to Disney World.

On getting through TSA with three kids

You know whatâs kinda stressful? Buying plane tickets for your wife and kids with credit card points. You save money on the flight but your seats arenât assigned until you check in the day before.

And then you find out that your wife and kids are scattered all across the plane for a four-hour flight. So you get to the airport early so you can get to the gate early and pray that theyâll be able to move you around so you can at least sit by your six-year-old.

But then the check-in lines are mega long and the TSA lines are even longer. And when you get to the front of the TSA line, with millions of people behind you, and your wifeâs Delta app with her boarding pass and all of the kidsâ boarding passes crashes and wonât reopen, and you have to leave the line to go print out physical boarding passes, and then you sneak back through the handicapped aisle so you donât have to wait in line again, and then you get back to the TSA person, and you realize you left one of the boarding passes on the printer, and you have to go back AGAIN, and come back AGAIN â all before you actually go through the horror that is the TSA screening â thatâs kinda stressful.

But we made it through.

On miracles

The flight was full, but the angel gate attendant was able to get me moved by Tate. Traci was a row in front of Curtis and Paige was an aisle and a few seats away from Traci. But Curtis, our anxious Curtis, was not very happy about sitting on his own row â even if Mom was within reaching distance. He was very nervous.

And then the miracle. Right as we were about to step off the jetway and into the plane, that same gate attendant scooted past everyone in line and told us they were able to move some things around and get Traci right next to Curtis.

Crisis averted.

On epic meltdowns

We survived the airport, we survived the flight, we made it to the hotel. Everyone was in good spirits. One more sleep and then it was time for Epcot.

And thatâs when the wheels came off.

The plan was to get up and get going early â me to my presentation, Traci to Epcot with the kids. But plans were no match for Tate. He got up, got dressed and then flatly refused to go to Epcot. He would not budge.

There was kicking and hitting and screaming. And lots of crying (by just about everyone in the family). But there was no moving.

âIâM. NOT. GOING. TO DISNEY WORLD!!!â

And no amount of bribery, threats, pleading or shouting was going to change that. So there we were, 2,300 miles from home â and a four-minute walk from Epcot â and we were stuck in the hotel, held hostage by a six year old.

âWell, Iâve gotta go give my presentation,â I said to Traci. âGood luck.â

(Worst father/husband ever.)

On negotiations

I went to my conference early to make sure all of the A/V was set up and running right. After I got that all locked down, I texted Traci.

âDid you make it to the park?â

âNo. Still in the hotel.â

No bueno.

I texted her again a half hour later.

âAny luck?â

âWeâre walking there now.â

âHowâd you get him to change his mind?â

âI told him that if he didnât leave the room, I would call hotel security and they would take him away.â

Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.

âAnd he said heâd only go if he didnât have to wear socks.â

Tate. The master negotiator.
Despite my usual pre-show nerves, things went smoothly. The videos worked. People laughed at my jokes and tweeted nice things about me.
On Disneyland vs. Disney World

In California, youâve got two parks â Disneyland and California Adventure. You can get through all of Disneyland in a day â maybe a day-and-a-half if you want to hit everything and ride some of your favorites a second time. California Adventure, though cooler in my opinion, can easily be done in a day or less. If you hustle, you can knock out your California trip in two days. Three is perfect. Four seems like overkill.

There are four parks in Disney World â Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios , Epcot, and Animal Kingdom. Our plan was to spend one day in each.

Magic Kingdom is a slightly smaller version of Disneyland. Youâve got Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Railroad, Small World, etc., but no Indiana Jones ride or Star Tours (which is at Hollywood Studios). It also has the Hall of Presidents â which, for some reason, Curtis was really excited about. Rating: Pretty Good.

Hollywood Studios is like a smaller California Adventure. Itâs got Tower of Terror, Toy Story Mania, and the Aerosmith Rockânâ Rollercoaster (which is like California Screamin, except itâs all inside and filled with Aerosmith stuff.) No Cars Land, which is a real bummer. We did everything we wanted to do by noon. Rating: Okay.
I only spent a few hours at Epcot after my conference. They have Test Track, which is a different spin on Radiator Springs and a Frozen Ride that means nothing to six and nine-year-old boys. They have lots of beers, which means nothing to Mormon parents. Rating: Could easily be skipped all together.
So, if youâre comparing California to these three parks in Florida, California wins hands down.

But when you throw in Animal Kingdom...
Animal Kingdom is rad. Itâs not just a rehash of the other parks. Itâs a completely different park altogether.
We loved seeing all the animals on the Kilimanjaro Safari and the zoo was great, too. The kids loved Primeval Whirl (it was too spinny for my taste) and the Dinosaur ride was pretty good.
Our favorite was Expedition Everest. We rode it FIVE TIMES. On our first ride, Tate and I were in the front seat and I probably screamed louder than anyone. It was scary awesome.

If we were to come back to Florida, weâd start with Animal Kingdom (and skip Epcot entirely).

Raing: Best of the bunch.

All of our Disneyland trips have been in October or November when the parkâs a little less crowded. Disney World in March is not ideal, especially when half the country is on spring break.

If we got to the park right when it opened â which isnât easy when your body is still on pre-daylight savings Mountain time â we could do few rides without much waiting. But by about noon, just about every ride had a 60-90 wait. Thanks to fastpasses, we were able avoid a lot of the lines but sometimes the waiting was inevitable.

Like when we wanted to go on Avatar Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom.

We couldnât get a fastpass, and no matter the time of day it was a two-and-a-half hour wait.

It couldnât really take that long, could it? It could. And it did.

Two hours, walking and standing in room after room after room. But we had to keep going because 1) Everyone told us it was the best ride in all of Disney World 2) It probably would have taken us a half hour just to get back out.

So we played the charades game on the iPhone. We ate treats. I imagined what it would happen if there was a natural disaster and we were stuck inside that infernal place.

But somehow we eventually made it to the front of the three-minute ride. Was it worth the wait?

It was a virtual reality ride, where you move back and forth as you stare at the enormous screen. It was supposed to make you feel like you were flying. Mostly it made me feel like I was going to throw up. The kids all said it was their favorite ride, so I guess it was worth it.

But all that waiting gets to you. Tate generally thought the best place to rest was on top of his sister. She was not amused.

On eating at Disney World

Because the conference was at the Disney Yacht Club, we stayed at a Disney hotel for our first time.
The Disney shuttle took us to the hotel and the Disney bus (or boat) took us to the parks, so there was no need for a car.

Ditching a car takes away so much stress. No waiting in line for a rental car. No forgetting to fill it up before bringing it back. No fretting that when you drop it off theyâre going to discover some imaginary defect that theyâre going to charge you for.

The only problem was when it came to eating. Whether youâre in the park or at the resort, the food has one thing in common: the cost. The exorbitant, excruciating cost. And since the resort is basically itâs own world, you would have to walk miles to find a non-Disney restaurant.

Enter UberEats. For a $5 surcharge plus a tip, we were able to bring in lukewarm dinner from the outside world. It felt like smuggling. But it was a lifesaver after eating hamburgers and chicken nuggets for four nights in row.

On Cicis Pizza

Iâm always intrigued by fast food joints that donât exist in Utah. Iâve seen ads for Cicis Pizza for years (I always wonder whoâs managing their ad spend. Clearly they shouldnât be advertising in the Beehive State, when they donât have stores here) and now was chance to finally try it! Thanks to UberEats, I now know that Cicis costs about as much as Liâl Caesars but is more flimsy and soggy.

On Ponchos

Curtis is very particular. Heâll wear flip flops but doesnât ever want them to get wet. He doesnât like the beach because he doesnât like sand touching his feet. And heâs scared of pretty much everything. This combination has resulted in a number of challenges, include his refusal to go on any water-based amusement park rides.

But we really wanted to go on Splash Mountain.

The solution to this quandary? Incredibly (or rather, gouging-ly) expensive ponchos. How much does it cost to buy Disney World ponchos for a family of five? $20? Higher. $25? Higher. $50? Ding, ding, ding. But theyâre not price gouging. An adult poncho is $10. But, thanks to the kind hearts at the Disney corporation, you can get a kid-sized poncho for just $9. The only problem is that kid-sized really means infant-sized â theyâre recommended for ages 5 and under.

But it did the trick. Curtis put on the poncho and we got in line. In solidarity (and to get my moneyâs worth), I put mine on, too.

The irony was that we didnât really need them. Traciâs face took the brunt of the splash â leaving Curtis and me bone dry. (She didnât think sheâd need a poncho.)

But these were not one-time use ponchos. We took them to the Animal Kingdom Kali River Rapids ride as well â where we were planning to get really wet. We got in the raft, fully encased in our plastic curtains, ready to laugh in the face of the oncoming water.

Oh, but nature had the last laugh.

The first splash went right past Traciâs poncho, straight down her socks and into shoes. The same splash hit me like a guided missile, dodging my poncho and finding its way down the back of my shorts. Paige was equally drenched. (The boys, somehow, remained dry.)

I felt just like Radioactive Man, when he was trapped in the river of acid. âThe goggles poncho, it does nothing!â

On flying back home

Despite the rough beginning, we had a really good trip. And getting home was much easier than getting there â the flight had more empty seats and we all got to sit together. Paige got to watch Wonder Woman. I got to watch the Simpsons. Curtis ate an enormous bag of Skittles. Traci read a book and Tate fell asleep.

Tate fell asleep? Uh-oh. When Tate falls asleep on a bumpy flight or windy trip in the car, he tends to barf when he wakes up.

And this time was no different. Right as we touched down, he threw up. Luckily, Curtis happened to be playing with the barf bag, so Traci was able to catch most of it with the bag. The rest she caught with herself. Ah, motherhood.

It feels good to be back home.
